William R. Dixon, 85, Indianapolis, IN passed away September 9, 2017.
Bill lived for his survivors, his wife Marilyn and his children Bob, Kebra, and Teresa; grandchildren, Breanna, Bartley, Braden, Emily, Devon, Erin and William. Family was everything to him. He adored all of his family, mother, Nelle; brother, Lloyd; sisters, Wiladel, Fannie, Elouise and Becky; including all his nieces and nephews. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them. Visiting family and family gatherings were always at the fore front with him.
He retired from Allison Transmission of General Motors at a young age. He then started a mowing/lawn care business. He was truly fulfilled with this profession. He loved his customers and gave their yards special attention even if they didn’t ask for it. He took great pride in employing his family members throughout the years, and involving his grandkids in one of his greatest passions.
Other passions were sports. Bill played high school basketball and baseball. He also went on to play both in college, and was fortunate to play one semi pro baseball game. He was a great bowler, averaged over 200 and was a superb golfer in his day. He loved coaching as a young man. He not only coached his son but his daughter’s sports too. He loved sharing his knowledge of sports with others as well as participating when he could on his own. He attended most all of the grandkids sporting games/events, and loved sharing with this generation as well. We have so many memories on the fields, courts, courses, and alleys with him.
We cannot go without mentioning his love for growing things. Gardening and flowers. Bill took so much pride in his garden. Tomatoes, green beans, corn, raspberries, and strawberries were his favorites. He grew the most amazing tomatoes and raspberry plants ever! His flowers were always beautiful. He loved lots of color and he loved going to Cox’s early in the season each year. He loved taking family there with him.
Lastly, we would like to mention that Bill served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a proud veteran like so many others.
We will all miss him dearly. He shared his love and passions with so many, and he will always be remembered for acts of love and kindness.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at noon with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at The Point Church and Community Center, 2578 Donica Road, Greenwood, IN 46143.
Burial immediately to follow at Grandview Cemetery, Bloomfield, IN.

What a beautiful tribute to a great man! We are all deeply saddened by the news of Bill’s passing. My mother, Clara Gootee and we (her family) always enjoyed seeing him. He did excellent work on her yard and was ever so accommodating with her requests. We were all deceived by his tall stature with his sweet and gentle nature. We will miss him and will keep you all in our prayers.
