
William C. Herman, a long-term resident of Indianapolis, passed away May 22, 2014. He retired from Eli Lilly after a long career as department head of photography and audio-visual services, joining the firm in 1955 as a photographer. At Lilly, he received a number of motion picture awards including a CINE’s Golden Award in medical films and a gold medal at the 1979 New York International Film Festival. Prior to joining Lilly, he worked for the Milwaukee Sentinel and the Indianapolis News.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Bill received his early education in Kansas City, Missouri. He was graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri in 1946. He attended both Marquette University and the University of Arizona. During his two years in the United States Army, he was the personal photographer for General Mark W. Clark.
Bill was a member of several industry organizations: National Audio-Visual Association, Professional Photographers of America and the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers. Other past memberships include: Woodstock Country Club, Board of Directors of Marion County Association for Retarded Children, Crows Nest Skeet Club and Meridian Hills Country Club.
He is survived by his children, William C. “Chip” (Carolyn) Herman, Jr., James G. “Greg” (Tempa) Herman and Wendy A. Herman; step-sister Nancy (Bob) Baxter; his step-sister-in-law Carolyn Calender; grandchildren Bill, Blair, Blake and Megan Herman; great grandson Oliver Herman.
Friends are invited to join the family at Woodstock Country Club on Tuesday, May 27 from 4-6 pm to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Hospice, 8450 N.
