William Delaney Baker, born on June 27, 1926, died reluctantly on May 21, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Susan Baker, with whom he shared a very large life.
Of his many accomplishments, the most meaningful was the bringing together of a dynamic and loving family. Each of his 3 children Bill Baker, Leslie Blackburn (Sunny) and Jim Baker; his step children Brad and Chris Lierman; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren have benefited from his legacy: an unmistakable sense of humor that was passed to them through his curmudgeon-like and bigger-than-life antics. The stories amass beyond the ability for his family and friends to re-tell, but we will be trying as long as we draw breath ourselves.
Bill was a Navy Veteran of World War II, which was a critical influence in his continued efforts to teach his children and grandchildren to drink hygienically from a cup, take very fast showers and to recite various and suspect limericks. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Master’s Degree in Business, and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He started his career as a manufacturer’s representative for the Franklin Furniture Company, and later for Henredon Furniture Company from which he retired in 1991.
The many life-long friendships he maintained from his childhood in Pittsburgh to his adulthood in Indianapolis are a testimony to his loyalty and caring. In his words, “sing no sad songs for me as I am with the Lord.” We celebrate that Heaven has received one of the most irascible, generous, quick-witted and passionate souls.

Dear Susie:
I just returned (June 9) from Alaska and Lolly shared with me about Bill’s passing. I am so sorry for you and your family. When I read his obituary I was LOL. He was such a character and we shared so many moments together. I would have been at the funeral had I been here.
I would love to have coffee with you when you can. Jay Alderman just sent me an e-mail trying to find out your address–sorry–I do not have it. Let me know if you would like to meet–I would like this very much.
God Bless you all and I send my hugs to you and your family.
