Walter “Wally” L. Mendel, 89, of Indianapolis passed away April 7, 2019. Walter was born on June 16, 1929, to the late Arthur and Esther Mendel in Indianapolis, Indiana. Growing up, Wally’s family operated Stelzel Florist out of their home. Wally, an avid Boy Scout, earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout with a gold palm. During World War II and while in the Boy Scouts, Wally took some classes and became a messenger for the ward in his district. He married his late wife, Lois Lucille Steiner, on June 23, 1961, at Linwood Christian Church.
Wally received a bachelor’s degree in Education from Indiana State University. He then served in the army during the Korean War in the Military Police. After his service, he furthered his passion for teaching and earned his master’s degree in Industrial Arts Education. Wally taught Graphic Arts at George Washington High School for 28 years and then went on to teach at Arsenal Technical High School and Broad Ripple High School. Wally enjoyed riding his recumbent tricycle around the streets of Carmel, building model train sets and Indian dancing.
Wally is survived by his three children, Marilou Mendel, Karen Sue Mendel and Mark William Mendel; and a granddaughter, Brandi Renee Mendel.
Visitation is set for Thursday, April 11th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W. Moore Chapel. Funeral Service will be at held 12:00 pm on Friday, April 12th at the funeral home with a graveside service to follow at Washington Park North.

What a wonderful friend Wally was. He and I taught Graphics Arts together at G.W.H.S. together for 21 years. I could not have had better partner for those 21 years.
