
The Reverend Doctor Thomas Eugene Wood passed away on December 12, 2017. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, to Eugene and Irene Wood, he was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Phillips University, his master’s degree from the Iliff School of Theology, and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Phillips Theological Seminary. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II and in Korea, and remained in the Army Reserves until he retired as a Chaplain Colonel. An ordained Disciples of Christ minister, he served churches in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado before coming to Indianapolis to join the denomination’s national staff. He served 30 years before retiring in 1991 as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of the Division of Homeland Ministries. Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Irene. He is survived by five daughters, Anita Kay (Steve) Schrader, Deborah Jean (Kerry) Wiggerly, Mary Beth (Willie) Storie, Kathryn Suzette Wood, and Sherri Lynne (Chris) Emmons; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Eastgate Christian Church on December 22, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Calling will begin at noon at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to express their gratitude to the kind and caring staff of Clare Bridge at Robin Run Village and St. Vincent Hospice.
