Susan V. Hicks, 83, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday morning, October 2, 2016. Born July 5, 1933, in Columbus, Ohio, she earned a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1956 and a Master of Nursing Education degree in 1959, both from the University of Pittsburgh. At different times in her career, she served on the faculties of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and the Indiana University School of Nursing and worked for many years in supervisory nursing positions at St. Vincent and other hospitals. In her home life, she always was significantly outnumbered, but in no way outmatched or outwitted, by an otherwise all-male household of one husband and four strapping, active boys to whom she administered magic doses of love, discipline, and high expectations.
Sue was a tremendous professional, wife, mother, and friend. She did not hesitate to speak her mind or to lead her family with high standards of integrity, loyalty, work ethic, and education. She never met a stranger and had a lifelong passion for her friends. Sue also had a passion for her antiques business, which occasionally made money and often served as a forum for converting her many customers into friends (and, of course, Sue would never profit from a friend).
Resilient and compassionate, Sue had a natural inquisitiveness and a zest for life. Her high expectations for hard work and education started early in life as she was a former Ohio spelling bee champ and a national spelling bee finalist. She also gained a unique perspective in life when, at age 10, her father enlisted as a medical doctor in General Patton’s Army and became severely disabled when his jeep ran over a land mine at the Battle of the Bulge.
The daughter of Peter A. Volpe, M.D. and Jeannette K. Volpe (of Columbus, Ohio and both deceased), Sue is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harry E. Hicks, her only brother, Peter A. Volpe II, M.D. (Theresa Morse), her four sons, Thomas H. Hicks, Robert J. Hicks (Thalia Hammond Hicks), Douglas A. Hicks (Catherine Bagwell), and Brian E. Hicks (Stacey Hicks), her 13 grandchildren, Katie Hicks Hanover, Joe Hicks, Jon Hicks, Matt Hicks, Lauren Hicks, Larissa Hammond, Hillary Hammond Rebollar, Noah Hicks, Ada Hicks, Tyler Hicks, Morgan Hicks, K.J. Ball, and Andrea Ball, and her beloved and well-fed dogs, Pepper and Milo.
