Ronald “Ron” Carl Porter, 79, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday February 27,2019.
Ron was born June 7, 1939 to Alma Koch Porter and Carl Austin Porter. Ron and his father were the owners of Broad Ripple Boat Docks located in Broad Ripple Park in the mid to late 1950’s, but Ron’s passion for chasing fire trucks lead him later in life to become a fire fighter. He married his wife Judi, on May 26, 1962 and moved to the Northside, where he joined the Washington Township Fire Department as a volunteer. He was hired as a paid firefighter in 1975. He retired in 2000 due to an ankle injury that made it unsafe for him to climb and perform his duties, but this did not keep him from being a member. He was hired by the fire department to assist with the equipment maintenance department and to run errands, as well as pickup and deliver repaired equipment to the fire stations. He loved working with the fire department.
Ron’s second passion was NASCAR. He would watch the races on TV and in person whenever he got the chance. Nearly every week you could find him in front of the tv watching his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, racing around different tracks.
Ron is survived by his wife of 56 ½ years, Judi; daughter, Sharli Knotts; Son-in-Law, Robert Knotts; his pride and joys/Granddaughters, Caitlin Knotts and Kailey Knotts; Great grandson Ronald Lee Talley IV; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Ron will be greatly missed and will forever be in their minds and their hearts.
