
Roberta May Halter, 90, died February 1, 2014, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born August 24, 1923, in St. Louis, Missouri, as the youngest of five children of Alfred and Daisy Radley, immigrants from England. Roberta graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis and attended Rubicam Business School, Hunter College, Drake and Washington Universities, and graduated from Butler University in 1968. She volunteered for the WAVES in World War II, attained the rank of Chief Yeoman, and was stationed in Washington, D.C., and Pearl Harbor.
She married James M. Halter July 26, 1947, in St. Louis. In the over 62 years until James’ passing, they celebrated three children, Christine Plews, Fred Halter, and Nancy Halter; son-in-law George Plews; grandsons Arthur, Matthew, Noah, and Lincoln Plews; six nieces and nephews, four great-nieces and nephews, and four great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James, her brothers King Radley and Fred Radley and her sisters Kate Zwirko and Daisy Fudge.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis for 61 years, taught Sunday School and was active in St. Monica’s Guild. She was a Girl Scout leader and taught camping skills to leaders for the Hoosier Capital Council. She was a founding member of the Shamrock Garden Club and the Jordan YMCA and taught water aerobics at the Benjamin Harrison YMCA. She and James were original householders in Brendon Park and were active in the Civic Association. Roberta kept gardens of vegetables and flowers, sewed, and took classes in Spanish for years. The Halter family hosted three AFS foreign exchange students, Mônica Machado of Brazil, Ture Jensen of Denmark and Felipe Real of Spain. Throughout retirement, Roberta and James traveled the USA, particularly to attend reunions of his 780th Bomb Squadron of the 15th Air Force. They visited almost every state and hosted the national reunion in Indianapolis in 2007. She also traveled to England, Scotland, Greece, Spain and Brazil to visit relatives and her AFS students. She enjoyed attending sporting and school events for her children and grandchildren.
In St. Louis, she worked in her father’s bakery (where a customer became her husband), a dental supply firm, a munitions factory, an insurance agency and Stix Baer and Fuller. She worked as a legal secretary in De Soto, Missouri. She and James moved to Indianapolis with the US Army Finance Center in 1953, and after her children were grown she worked as a travel agent, a tax consultant for the IRS, and as a volunteer tutor at the Worthmore Academy.
Calling will be Friday, February 7th, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Fortune Room of Trinity Episcopal Church in Indianapolis and Saturday, February 8th, from 12:30 p.m. with the funeral service following at 2 p.m. at Trinity. She will be buried with military honors at Monday, February 10, at 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
