Robert Lee Decker, 97, passed away on June 30, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN. Robert (Bob) was born in Morris, IL, on September 27, 1921, son of the late Stanley H. Decker and Stella Terry Decker. Bob served in the United States Army from 1942-1945 after which he earned a B.M.E. from University of Louisville in 1949. He was employed as an engineer by United States Gypsum Company from 1949 until his retirement in 1986. Bob and his wife, Helen Lindley of Louisville, KY, were married 70 years, living in Lewistown, MT, Park Forest, IL, and Hendersonville, NC, and were the parents of three daughters. Bob always enjoyed working with his hands and making improvements to the homes where he and Helen lived, including room additions, remodeling, furniture refinishing and landscaping. He also enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, growing vegetables in his garden and watching NASCAR races. After Helen’s death in 2014, Bob moved to Indianapolis to be near family.
Bob is survived by daughters, Debbie Decker and Patti Sorensen (Kjeld) of Indianapolis, IN and Anne Pellegrino (Anthony) of Highland Park, IL; grandchildren Michael Sorensen (Lindsey), Rachel Gilpin and Kimberly Megli (Kevin) of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchildren Addison and Nolan Megli of Indianapolis, IN; and niece, Janet Torkelson (Howard) of Morris, IL.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Henry L. Decker of Morris, IL; his niece, Jerri Johnson of Morris, IL; and his beloved wife, Helen.
A Memorial Service is planned for July 29, 2019 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:
