Rickey (Rick) Shively passed peacefully from this earth to paradise from his home in Crawfordsville, Indiana with his loved ones at his side, on Thursday, 5/25/17 at 9:45am. He was 70 years old.
Rick is survived by his adoring wife, Mae, and his grown children Stephanie (James) McGuire (Fishers, IN), Rhonda (Darin) Earl (Rockford, IL), Nathan (Vey) Shepherd (St Paul, IN), Delana (Don) Ward (Brownsburg, IN), and Jodi Simpson (Crawfordsville, IN). He had 18 grandchildren (Mary, Mac, Kevin, Ryan, Ashley, Alissa, Kristena, Sam, Jake, Curtis, Morgan, Grace, Nate, Matthew, Natalie, Hunter, Presley, Laci, and Sadi) and 4 great grandchildren (Harry, Kameron, Lillie, and Karter). He is preceded in death by his father, Leonard Shively and his mother, Evelyn Shively. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Rodney, Ronnie, and Roger, and a sister, Jeannie.
Rick was born on September 9, 1946 in Greenfield, IN to Leonard and Evelyn Shively. He graduated from Greenfield High School and joined the Navy. After 20+ years of service he retired as an electronic engineer with an E-8 ranking; he went on to work for many years at Nucor Steel where he eventually retired. He married the love of his life, Mae, on August 18, 1989.
Rick was the father of two daughters, Rhonda and Stephanie, and he was the wonderful step-father extraordinaire and earthly father to Nathan, Delana, and Jodi. Mae and all his children remember him as being what Rhonda and Delana call (affectionately) “weird”, with a kind, loving heart; he enjoyed endlessly debating and arguing any topic, whether it was science, politics, religion, or life and all its wonders, in general. He elicited many eye-rolls and sighs of, ‘Is he done yet?’, and he loved it. He was a simple and non-complex man, yet very deep; he was stoic- never complained about pain, discomfort, or any disappointments- he just sat back and took in all the things and let things be as they may. While he was a proud man, a provider, and a man of service, he would very much dislike this tribute and the attention in his regard. He was so proud of all his children and their successes, and enjoyed watching as their lives evolved; he always encouraged them to pursue their goals and to reach high. Most of all, though, he was an unwavering statue of love and support to his wife and best friend, whom he adored.
A memorial service, fellowship, and celebration of life is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 2-4pm, that will be directly followed by a message officiated by Pastor Rick Fay with Calvary Fellowship of Greencastle, as requested by Rick. Services will be held at Church@Main, located at 1500 East Main Street, Brownsburg, IN. Reception/dinner for close family will follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rick’s life. The family would like to thank SouthernCare Hospice for their care and dedication to Rick’s final months on earth.

Mae and children, dear cousin, Mae, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved Rick. I remember when I met Rick at a family reunion, after my husband, Rick, had retired from the Marine Corps. It was wonderful talking with him and comparing notes about retirement. I wish to thank him for his service to our country. I was very impressed with your husband, Mae. I am praying for you and you and the wonderful family you made together. I love you, Mae.

Im am so sorry to hear of this news as I I just recently was made aware. Rick had many here at Nucor that loved him, and personally I admired a lot of things about him. he was a good man, hard working, and always there to help. He was trustworthy and could always be counted on. he was very soft spoken, but could get very passionate in his conversations when it was something he held dear. I loved the obit as its really sums him up. I am glad for him, to hear that he has gone home, and he has been and will be missed.
