
Norman Allen Spradlin (Norm),75, passed away unexpectedly aboard The Eurodam cruise ship just off the coast of Copenhagen, Denmark, on Thursday morning, May 22. He was born on April 30, 1939, to Henry Lee and Irene Elizabeth (Bartley) Spradlin in Hart County, Kentucky.
Currently a resident of Florida, Norm spent most of his adult years in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he lived with his wife of 50 years, Virginia G. Spradlin (Ginny) until they moved to Naples, Florida in 2011.
Besides Ginny, Norm is survived by two daughters, Jill Ann Spradlin Love (Mike) and Lori Diane Spradlin Saueracker (Paul). Also surviving are three grandchildren, Kira Lea Olson, Michael Eli Olson, and Laura Elizabeth Olson, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Lewis T. Olson.
Norm started grade school in Hart County, Kentucky, and finished in Hobbs, Indiana. His family then moved to Tipton, Indiana, where he graduated from Tipton High School in 1958. Later he went on to Butler University where he graduated in 1965 with a BS degree, then completed his Masters Degree at Ball State University.
His professional career began at Danners, Inc. where he started as a stock boy during high school, then moved up the ladder to various positions including Vice President of Operations. Later he worked for Que Corporation before joining Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) serving as Director of Operations until his retirement in 2001.
Norm was an active member of a number of congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), spending the longest period of his life as a member of Allisonville Christian Church in Indianapolis. He was currently a member of Fort Myers Christian Church. During these years he taught Sunday School and served as deacon, elder, stewardship chair and board chair.
He coached Allisonville Little League from 1980-1986, coaching the Allisonville All-Star team three of those years. Earlier he participated in the Y’s Indian Princess program with both daughters.
During his years at Danners, Inc., he was active in the Atkins Boys Club taking Boys Club youths on special outings. He also represented Danners, Inc. in United Way activities, first serving as a division chair and later heading up the small business campaign for the city of Indianapolis.
In later years Norm served on the board of Robin Run, then a retirement facility of the National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), serving one year as Vice President of the board.
Finally, as a property owner he served on the boards of Sylvan Ridge Lakes and Garden Walk communities in Indianapolis and Sterling Oaks in Naples, Florida.
Visitation will be held first from 4-8 PM on Thursday, May 29, at Allisonville Christian Church, 7701 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, Indiana, then again from 9:30 to 11 AM on May 30 followed by a memorial service at 11 AM at the church.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Holland America for all the help they made available following Norm’s sudden death and to the staff of Indiana Funeral Care and Crematory in Indianapolis for their part in receiving the remains, which will be cremated and interred at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Gould-Spradlin Family Fund to benefit ministries of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ) administered by the Christian Church Foundation, P.O. Box 1986, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46206-1986.
