Nicholas E (Nick) Slabaugh, 81, of Indianapolis, IN passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 due to complications of COPD and Emphysema. He told us that he felt he had a wonderful life thanks to his wife, family and all the friends and associates he has been fortunate to know.

He was the oldest child and only son born to Norris Elwood Slabaugh and Janet Arlene Price Slabaugh. He was born in Sturgis, MI on November 14, 1936, and he was raised in LaGrange, IN graduating from LaGrange High School in 1954. Nick attended Indiana University, Bloomington, IN starting in 1955 but withdrew after a year and a half.

Nick enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO for his basic training, plus an additional 6 weeks of training beyond basic. Following the training, he was sent to Ft. Leavenworth, KS to work at the Command and General Staff College where he completed his military service. While there, he married Elisabeth Ann Lindley on August 23, 1958. When he mustered out of the service, Nick and Ann located to Bloomington, IN where he again attended college, majoring in Marketing through the School of Business, graduating with Honors in January 1962. Nick started his career working for IBM, becoming a System and data analyst at a time when computers were just coming into being. He then spent approximately 25 years doing contract work as his own boss, or assisting with other start-up companies. He ended his career working in the Department of Defense, Building One of the Finance Center located at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, IN.

Ann and Nick have two children, Nancy J. LaFon (Stephen), and Neil E. Slabaugh (Julie). Additionally, after Nick’s sister Ann Elizabeth and her husband Wayne, passed away, they became guardians to their niece, Elizabeth Ann Kimmel, and nephew, Henry S. Kimmel (Anita). Nick very much enjoyed being around his grandchildren, Cassie Kimmel Miller (Sam), Cadey Kimmel, Allyson, Monica, and Natalie LaFon, Lauren Kimmel Zeiss (Tim), Sharon Kimmel-Smith, and Arthur Kimmel-Smith. Nick and Ann are fortunate to also have two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Gavin Zeiss.

Surviving Nick are his wife, Ann of 59 years, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and his sister Jan Pilgrim and her spouse, Preston, and their daughter Jennifer.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kindred Bridgewater for their care and compassion during Nick’s last days. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
