
Mervin R “Picc” Freeland, 93, died October 23. He was born in Sunman and graduated from Connersville H.S. He served in the Navy during WWII participating in four European invasions including Normandy. He earned a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati. He held an Architect’s license from 1958 – 2005 retiring from the Dept. of HUD in 1984. A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of Connersville Masonic Blue Lodge.
On January 4, 1964 he married Edith Windhorst of Greenfield who preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived by his son, John (Wendy) Freeland; two grandsons, Jacob and A.J.; two sisters, Lorraine Russell and Joyce Smith; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were three sisters, Gladys Buschmann, Doris Freeland and Jennie Keller.
He learned to play the flute and piccolo in high school and acquired the nickname of Picc from playing the piccolo. He was a 50 year member of both the Scottish Rite Orchestra and the Murat Shrine Concert Band. Most recently he was a member of the New Horizons Band from 2002 – 2013.
Memorial service will be held on November 14th at Northside Baptist Church, 3021 E 71st St. in Indianapolis. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm with memorial service beginning at 2:00 pm. His remains will be interred at a plot at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Sunman, IN at a later date.
