“To Live In The Hearts We Leave Behind Is Not To Die.”
Mary Walsh, 92, passed away peacefully at 11:28am on January 27, 2016, at home with her daughter by her side. She was born on March 28, 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland to Andrew Cumming and Peggy McKay Cumming and was one of 5 siblings. She enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) during World War II and was trained as a Barrage Balloon Operator. The object of a Barrage Balloon Operator was to make incoming Luftwaffe bombers fly higher than they would want to, therefore making it tougher to hit their targets. During the Blitz of the Battle of Britain, the work done by Barrage Balloon Operators was very important. It was during World War II that she met her future husband, Thomas F. Walsh, and came to the United States and got married in 1951. Mary was a housewife and devoted mother of 3 children, David A. Walsh of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth A. Piron of Carmel, IN, and Anne Marie Perry of Carmel, IN, and 4 grandchildren, Cristiano Piron, Julian Piron, Sara Walsh & Zachary Walsh. She is also survived by a sister, Annie Wallis, who resides in South Africa. Graveside service is being held at 1pm on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens on Allisonville Road in Indianapolis, IN.
