Mary Lou Martin-Haines

Age 82 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on March 21^st, surrounded by her loving family. Mary Lou was born on September 16, 1934 to Carl and Nellie Martin in Madison, IN.  She attended Madison High School, later moving to Indianapolis.

Mary Lou taught special education at IPS School 5, before beginning her career with the State of Indiana. She worked in several different agencies and her final position was with Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, serving as the Director for several years before her retirement in 1997. Mary Lou was a tireless advocate for individuals who have developmental disabilities and mental illness. After a few years of retirement, Mary Lou returned to work at St Francis Hospital. Proudly, Mary Lou was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Nellie Martin; ex-husband and life-long friend, Jack (Hippo) Haines; and her daughter, Terry Haines.

She is survived by her children, Jackie Haines (Terry Gallagher), Steve Haines (Cindy Lawson), Luanne Haines (Nancy Murray), Travis Combs (Sandra); grandchildren; Grace Haines-Gallagher, Brandon Johnson (Beth), Amanda Johnson, Trasan and Sierra Combs; great grandchildren, Avery Johnson, Shea Johnson, Brogan and Brodie Johnson; sister, Wanda Whitaker (James) and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Her family would like to express their gratitude to Lisa Higgenbotham for the care she provided to their mother while living at home. Mary Lou enjoyed her friendship with Wanda Dean during her rehabilitation at Community Nursing and Rehabilitation Services. In addition, the family is very appreciative of the wonderful and compassionate care provided by the staff at Green House Cottages of Carmel.

Mary Lou requested that there will be no formal services. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
