Martha Ann Johnson returned to her heavenly home on August 23, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and firm belief in God supported her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Martha was born July 5, 1952 in Carrollton, Georgia to Sallie Stephens Farris and Hulett Farris. She was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support from an early age she accepted Christ and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Georgia. After the family moved to Indianapolis in 1968 she became a member of All Friends Missionary Baptist Church and United Methodist Church each for over 20 years.
Martha was blessed with a large and loving family. She married her best friend, Robert “Bobby” Lee Johnson, on September 10, 1977 in Indianapolis. Martha and Bobby raised their child along with several God children with patience and humility.
Martha was very active in her church life including: Chairperson for the Women’s Ministry, Vice President of the Nurses Gill, Counselor for the Youth Outreach Ministry, Co-Chair of Vacation Bible School, Choir and United Methodist Women member, and served on several boards and committees.
Martha displayed her love for education by always pushing herself to learn. She started by graduating from Arsenal Technical High School and proceeded with Vincennes University, Indiana University and later received a Master of Science from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Martha’s career expanded over 31 years at AT&T in directory assistance, where she retired in 2002. She later worked to occupy her time at United Way of Central Indiana with the Torch Bearers program and for the public school system as an instruction assistant.
Martha’s love and passion for the community extended into several areas. She served on the Jacer’s Inn and Indianapolis Nike Academic Athletic League boards. In addition, she put her communication and people skills to work by assisting as a campaign volunteer manager.
Martha enjoyed traveling and meeting people, but most of all she loved her family. She lived by the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator.
Martha is survived by her husband, Robert Lee; son, Robert Lamont (Meinyana); sisters, Catherine (Joseph), Minnie, Stella (Charles); grandchildren, Alexis, Bobby, Derrick, Jasmine, Maciah; great-grandchild, Ry’Leigh; godsons, Tony, Troy; god-daughters, Jennifer (Khani), Robin; god-grandchildren, Kahni, Karrington. I am so sorry to hear of the death of Martha. The passing away of a loved one is always with much sorrow. May we have faith and confidence in the Bible’s promise of a time when pain, sickness and death are a thing of the past (Revelation 21:3, 4). My condolences are with the family at this difficult time.
