Margaret Schwedes Chisholm of Carmel, passed away on July 10, 2018, just five days shy of her 97th birthday. Margie was born on July, 15, 1921, in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Walter and Leila Schwedes. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, MO, where she won a national championship in archery. Margie’s career dream was to be a spy, but in 1942, she met the love of her life, Robert H. “Bunk” Chisholm. They wed four months later and were joyously married for fifty-four years until Bunk’s passing. They raised their family first in Hibbing, MN, and then in Poland, Ohio. Her great attention to detail (excellent for spy work) served her well as she raised three active sons and ran the household with love and devotion. Her hobbies included needlepoint, sewing, miniatures, and she was a whiz at crossword puzzles and Sudoku. She loved to hear a good joke, and she often came back with a witty retort.
Margie and Bunk retired to Tucson where she lived until 2010 when she moved to Carmel to be closer to family. “Home” was always the Opeeche Lodge in Brule, WI, where the family summered on the river. The Brule was her favorite place on earth, and she loved sitting, reading, or having “Father’s Hour” on the front porch of Opeeche. When she was 85, she took a kayak out on the river, and at 88, she was discovered on the roof painting second-floor window frames.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Walter Schwedes, her sister, Mary S. Findlayson, and her beloved son, Robert H. (Bob) Chisholm. She is survived by her sons, Douglas (Beth) Chisholm of Indianapolis, Duncan M. (Marla) Chisholm of New Canaan, CT, her grandchildren, Sally (Sherman) Stevenson, Douglas, Jr. (Jill) Chisholm, Jennifer (Jeff) Bowles, Michael (Krissy) Chisholm, Erin (Tom) Kanter, Cameron (Kara) Chisholm, and Alex Chisholm. She had fourteen great-grandchildren, Taylor, Griffin, Nicholas, Molly, Jack, Maggie, Sam, Kate, Ben, Betsy, Lillian, Vivian, Talia, and Ava.
Margie’s celebration of life will be held at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis. Calling hours begin at 1:00 pm followed by a service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Brule River Preservation, PO Box 15, Brule, WI 54820 or bruleriverpreservation.org.
