Lorene Davis was born February 10, 1941 in Rosedale Mississippi to Henry and Marie Lee who preceded her in death. Later the family moved to Elkhart, Indiana where she attended Elkhart High School.
In 1960 Lorene married Lester Ellison. From this union three children were born – Tracy, Leslie and Kerry. She remained a devoted wife until his death in 1984.
Later Lorene united in marriage to the late Rev. Emory G. Davis and enjoyed married life for over 29 years until his passing in January 2018. Emory lovingly referred to Lorene as “Love” which was a testament to their marriage. Together they enjoyed traveling, music and dancing, but most of all, they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Da”.
Lorene was a social worker at Family Counseling Services in Elkhart, Indiana for several years. Her work as a social worker earned her several awards and recognition. Lorene was awarded the Golden Deed Award which recognizes individuals who worked tirelessly advocating for the less fortunate to ensure they had proper access to health care and living assistance.
Lorene also worked with the local organization of People Who Need People which was a group of both African American and Caucasian mothers who played an integral part in bridging the ethnic gap and pulling the community together through heightening sensitivity, raising cultural awareness and building bridges of communication and understanding. She could often be found in the local schools advocating for the children in the community.
Lorene later became a member of the volunteer group, Panel of American Women, who encouraged people to join the fight to save their children, their schools and their community. Most recently, Lorene was an active member of University United Methodist Church working closely on various ministry boards, including Mission Five.
Lorene enjoyed gardening and could be found in her garden tending to her flowers on any given day. Lorene was a dedicated wife, mother, sister and friend. She never met a stranger and was always available to lend a listening ear and to provide guidance.
Lorene was preceded in death by her sister Rosene Holliday. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children Tracy, Leslie and Kerry Ellison (Tonya), stepson Emory “Butch” Davis, III; two sisters Celia Danner and Barbara Kemp; two brothers Jessie Williams (Ora) and Joe Michael Williams; three granddaughters, six grandsons and one great grandson and a host of nieces, nephews, lifelong friends and constant companion Pee Wee.
