March 5, 2017 Kevin Patrick Burris went home to God. He was married to Karen (Schinlaub)Burris of Indianapolis, son of John and Patricia (Grove) Burris of Indianapolis, Father to Andrew Patrick Burris of Indianapolis and brother to Dr. Christopher Todd Burris of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Kevin graduated from Ritter High School in Indianapolis near the top of his class in 1977 and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Radio and Television in 1982 from Butler University where he was named “Outstanding Senior.”
Kevin was the Morning Show Producer at WIRE Radio and the Producer of Wire’s TV show
“The Country Store” from 1982 to 1986. He then worked as a Morning Show Producer and on air talent for WENS, WIBC, and WKLR. Kevin was the Program Director for WMYS now WXNT, and an on-air talent for WTPI. In 2002, a full-time on air position became available at WWKI in Kokomo and Kevin pursued that opportunity and was hired to be the Afternoon Drive announcer. In his 13 years at WWKI he was also the Morning Show host, co-host of the daily talk show “Male Call,” and a co-host of Kokomo’s Annual “We Care Telethon.” While at WWKI, he met his wife Karen who also was employed at WWKI.
Kevin also loved the outdoors and spent many hours by a pond or on a lake fishing with his son Andrew. Kevin loved cooking too. If there was a cooking show on TV Kevin was probably watching it. Even as a child he loved the “Galloping Gourmet.” All the knowledge he gained over the years made him an outstanding cook. Whether it was in the kitchen or at the barbeque grill, his creations were always delicious.
Kevin loved auto racing which is what brought Kevin and Karen together. It was the main topic of discussion on their first date. At that moment, they knew they had a special connection. Kevin and Karen went to many racing events including Indy Car, NHRA Drag Racing, USAC Sprint events, and NASCAR. They enjoyed many trips to race tracks all over the country.
On August 9, 2005, Kevin proposed and Karen’s dream came true. They were wed February 11, 2006 in Brownsburg, Indiana.
Music was one of Kevin’s other passions. His favorites included Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Merle Haggard, and Willie Nelson. When Kevin worked at WIRE, he even got to meet one of his all-time favorites, Johnny Cash.
Kevin was an incredibly thoughtful gift giver. No one took more time and made more effort to find the perfect gift for those he loved. Karen liked a perfume from the 1980’s, and when it was discontinued she looked all over to find it. Stores, internet… everywhere. One Christmas morning when it was time to open gifts, Karen unwrapped an original box of that perfume that Kevin managed to find somewhere. This is just one example of the effort he put into making his family happy. Kevin also made his family and friends laugh. His quick wit and dry sense of humor was a gift to all who knew him.
Kevin was very proud of the charity work he did in conjunction with his radio career. He was especially proud of the fundraising he did for Riley Children’s Hospital which earned him the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1987. Kevin had a heart for kids.
Kevin’s “Celebration of Life” service will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Indiana Funeral Care at 8151 Allisonville Road in Indianapolis. Calling will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm with the service at 1:00pm. A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Kevin’s name to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
