James Robert Bailey died Thursday, October 18, 2018, at age 73. He was born in Portland, Indiana on October 5, 1945. He graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he grew up. He received a B.A. from Oklahoma City University and an M.A. in Adult Education and Gerontology from Ball State University.
He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. After being diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago, he set up a cancer screening at his church and started an advocacy group for people with bladder cancer. He also served as a consumer reviewer for the DOD for various cancer grant proposals.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Sandra K. Bailey; his sister-in-law Linda Klein and brother-in-law Erv Klein of Louisville, KY; his brother-in-law James R. Youtsey of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and cousins and half-cousins; and by his little dog Juliet. He was preceded in death by his mother Doras V. Bailey and his father James Ralph Bailey.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on October 26 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. The Reverend John Paulson will officiate. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. A private graveside service will be held later in Dayton, Ohio. The Reverend Charlotte Lorenz will officiate. Arrangements have been made through Indiana Funeral Care.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Faith Presbyterian Church or to Bluegrass Shih-Tsu Rescue.
