Irene Haney Kuehr was born on April 9, 1930, the third child of Nora Haney. During her childhood, Irene spent hours riding her bicycle, playing tennis, and establishing her love of God and the Catholic Church. The days of her youth helped her develop the independence and love of nature that sustained her throughout her life.
Her life really begin on New Years Eve 1962, when a friend introduced her to a handsome young man, Robert Kuehr. They were married on July 13, 1963, and shortly after, God blessed them with two daughters, Karen and Julie. The family moved to Michigan Street on the East side of Indianapolis in 1970.
It was on Michigan Street where Irene spent the best years of her life. Together, Irene and Bob built a home full of laughter and love. Irene often said that parenting was her greatest joy, and she devoted beautiful summer days to teaching her daughters to climb trees, play tennis, ice skate, and love dogs. The doors to the Kuehr house were always open to welcome neighborhood children who considered Irene an extended mother.
Irene loved the outdoors and found peace in nature. In her middle age, she enjoyed the trails of Brown Country State Park and reveled in the beauty of the tress. As long as she was able, Irene never passed up a tennis match and long afternoon naps.
Irene has been reunited in heaven with her soul mate, Robert “Bob” Kuehr. Left behind are her beloved daughters and sons-in-law: Karen and Doug Dewar; and Julie and Brian Armstrong. Also left to carry on her legacy are her grandchildren Gina and Shelly Dewar; and Alex and Norah Armstrong.
Do not cry for Irene, for she has not left us. She will live forever in the winter’s first snow fall, the warm spring showers, the long summer days, and the colorful fall foliage.
Until we meet again, Irene, rest in the peace that you so deserve.
Funeral Mass will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7243 East 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46219 on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 11:30am. Visitation will be held prior to service from 10am – 11:30am. Entombment to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
