Harold moved to Indianapolis to live with one of his aunts. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and worked at White City Amusement Park, now Broad Ripple Park. Harold told the story about how he met his future bride, Mary Frost, there. Mary, also, became a beautician.
WWII started. Harold joined the Army and taught many soldiers how to use firearms. In June of 1945, Mary went to Dothan, Alabama where she and Harold were married by a Justice of the Peace.
In December 1946 their first child, Beverly Diane, who later became a beautician, was born. On July 4th 1950 the family moved to Fishers, Indiana. Sue Ellen, their second daughter, was born in September 1950.
In 1955 Harold and seven or eight other gentlemen started the Fishers Volunteer Fire Department. Harold was chosen to be the first fire chief. He is a past Commander of the Fishers Lowell Beaver Legion Post 470. The Legion is honoring Harold by having a brick engraved with his name and placing in it the Fishers Freedom Plaza. On his 94th birthday, the Legion honored by presenting him with the certificate.
Harold was born to be a salesman. While working for the
R.T. French Company, he called himself a mustard and bird seed peddler. For a brief period Harold drove a school bus. Having a salesman’s heart, he began selling items at flee markets and earned the nick-name Happy Pappy the Marble Man. Harold retired from the Ford Motor company and concentrated more on the flee markets. At home he repaired lawnmowers and bicycles. He had an honorary payment home-grown tomato stand.
Harold lived 94 beautiful years filled with love.
