January 18, 1931 – March 6, 2019
Ellen Elizabeth Hagist was born at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana, the 6th child of Herman J Hagist and Evelyn (Barrett) Hagist.
Ellen was a life-long Beech Grove resident. She attended Holy Name Grade School and St. John’s Academy. Ellen was also a life-long member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She was interested in sports – preferring college sports to professional sports. She was an avid Notre Dame and Butler fan, but would cheer for any Indiana team. And she loved watching Little League. Ellen was known for her spot-on picks during March Madness.
Ellen retired from the Army Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison after over 30 years of service. She then worked for Beech Tree House daycare until she decided to fully retire. Ellen was active with the Beech Grove Senior Citizen’s Group and for many years was on a bowling team with her sister and sister-in-law.
In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death her brother Jacob Hagist and his wife Rosella, brother Herman Hagist and his wife Helen, sister Dolores Stewart and her husband Verner, and her sister Mary Jane Porter and her husband Richard. Ellen also lost a sister at birth.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. We will miss her smile and laughter, as well as her chocolate chip cookies, fruit cakes, and the ice cream cones she kept in the freezer for the kids. We know she is playing cards in heaven with the rest of her family.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 9 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 89 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, IN. Viewing will start at 12:30 PM in the church, with a Mass of Christian Burial starting at 1:30. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Ellen was a very dear person. She was such a loving and wonderful caregiver to our babies and little ones at Beech Tree House. She touched many lives, including the children, the parents and families, and her co workers in a beautiful way! We missed her so much when she left us for a well deserved retirement. She will always be a special part of our school family. We will forever love her. God bless her loving spirit today and always.✝️
