LOLA
Strength, faith, forgiveness, and love…………in spades.
On Friday, January 25, 2019, Editha Guiates Gearns, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 71. Editha “Edie”, “Lola”, was born on February 10, 1947, in Julita, Leyte, Philippines. Her life was a celebration of those four admired qualities, and a testament to overcoming adversity.
She came to the United States and began building a life for herself and her family in Michigan. Early on, she was faced with insurmountable misfortune, challenges and hardships. Edie’s dedication to hard work, tireless faith, and commitment to her family, always allowed her to persevere no matter how great the obstacle. She was the definition of a blue-collar worker in America. 40 plus hours weekly. Retirement age did not apply. She enjoyed working.
With her life built in Michigan, Edie grew a quaint network of Filipino girlfriends whom she would remain friends with and cherish for the rest of her life. She had two favorite pastimes, bingo and playing cards with her girlfriends. When she wasn’t cooking amazing Filipino (and American) meals for her family, you could find her playing card games with her friends until the very late hours of the night.
Edie had the most infectious laugh. She loved to laugh with friends and family. Everyone loved to laugh with her. If Lola was laughing, it was funny, even if you really didn’t think it was funny. Her smile and laughter could make the impossible funny.
Edie was a devout Catholic and proud Democrat. She rarely missed a weekly mass. She donated to her favorite charitable and activist causes, and favorite candidates. Her faith was unshakeable and her ideology unwavering. She was proud to lead by example. Generosity and forgiveness were stalwarts of her daily regime. She loved and fought hard for what she believed in. A warrior and an angel all in one.
Edie’s greatest passion was her love for family. Edie beamed with pride and joy when she was with or spoke of any of her grandchildren. And to them, there was nobody they loved more than their Lola.
Edie is preceded in death by her mother, Daniella Alonzo, her father Eufrocino Vinas, her sister Yoling Baldibia, brother Boy Vinas, and the father of her children, Eric Gearns. She is survived by two sons, Jamie (Maggie) Gearns, Sean Gearns, three daughters, Lane Musich, Daniella (Daniel) Bryant, Susan(Eduardo) Porazo ,eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Kennedy Musich, McKenna Musich, Cade Musich, Maya Gearns, Payton Bryant, Journey Gearns, Liam Gearns, Chad Edison Gatbonton Porazo (Tristan and Thaddeus), Ckali Francis Gatbonton Porazo(Prince Harry), Clark Gatbonton Porazo (Dan Elix), Eduardo Gatbonton Porazo Jr.
