
On Friday, April 21, 2017, the Angel of Silence summoned Doris Enid Farnum-Jackson, a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to all.
Born in Georgetown, Guyana on June 13, 1922, she was the eldest child of Mary Frances and Percy Scott. Doris professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized in accordance with the Holy Rites of the Roman Catholic Church. She had been a member of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catherine of Genoa in Brooklyn, New York and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Palmdale, California.
Enid was educated by the Georgetown School System for elementary and high school. She attended British Guiana Public Hospital in Georgetown and received a Certificate of Competence as a Nurse and became a Registered Nurse on January 3, 1957. Doris left Georgetown on August 19, 1957. She arrived in the United States sponsored by the Guyanese Nurses Association to pursue her dream of becoming a U.S. citizen.
January 1958, she met her loving husband Cozel Jackson in Brooklyn, New York, and they were married November 27, 1958. Out of that union their only child Deborah was born. They were married for thirteen years before he preceded in her in death on March 8, 1972.
Enid applied for citizenship December 1958 while attending University of New York where she received her GED, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and her Master’s degree in Nursing. She was granted Citizenship on June 25, 1963.
Enid retired in 1987 after 30 years as a Registered Nurse. Enid then relocated to Palmdale, California and became active at St. Mary’s Church and the Silver Sneakers Club. She loved her family, which she entertained on a regular basis. BBQs or holiday meals, the Jackson house was always a lively place.
Enid lived a full life, traveling throughout Europe, Hawaii, and the good old U.S. that she loved so very much.
She leaves to cherish her memory her only daughter Deborah (Emmanuel) McClendon, grandson Carey Hairston, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by all her siblings: Fitz, Earnestine, Compton, and Maurice Jones.
Those who knew Enid describe her as loving, kind, and having a heart of gold. She treated everyone like family. She will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W. Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Marion National Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
