Don’s goal was to reach 100. He did it. He passed away comfortably at home on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019.
A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, he was born March 1st, 1919. His parents were Albert Eugene Glidden, and Rovene Veronica Altenbach, and only sister, June Glidden. Don was a graduate of Shortridge High School 1938.
A WWII Army veteran (1960th Quartermaster Truck Company Aviation) saw combat in the South Pacific as the rank of Sargent. He was qualified as a Rifle Sharp Shooter and had an Honorable Discharge and was the recipient of two Bronze stars, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal WWII.
He was happily married to Virginia Lou Parker for 69 years. Don & Jinnie met while working at the Marrott Hotel when they were juniors in high school. He was a bell boy and she sold cigars and cigarettes. After the war they were married in April of 1946, they had two children — Linda and Gary.
He retired from Eli Lilly, having worked helping make insulin and cancer products for 32 years — 1947-1980.
Never an idle person, Don drove up until he was 99. He travelled the US, seeing every state except for North Dakota. He loved to fish, play golf, go on vacation, watch baseball, and refinished furniture and puttered around the house as a past time.
Don and Virginia will be missed, and they are now finally together along with Gary, and many of his loved ones.
He’s survived by his daughter Linda Falkenstein (Bill), and grandson’s Tom (Kathy), Tim (Kelly), & Scott Meyers, as well as great grand children Philip, Koda, Rowan, and Faith.
Visitation services will be held at Indiana Funeral Care Castleton at 12pm Friday March 8th.
Don will be buried next to his wife Virginia and son Gary at Crown Hill Cemetery, with military honors.
