David Walter Lawson, 79, of Indianapolis, IN joined our Heavenly Father on the morning of Saturday, April 14, 2018.  David was born August 17, 1938 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Walter F. and Goldie Smith Lawson.

David graduated from IPS School 91, then from Broad Ripple High School in 1957.  He joined the Army in 1961 and after basic training was stationed in Hawaii for 2 years.  Upon returning to Indiana from active duty, he worked at Herff Jones for 10 years; where he met his wife Margie.

In 1967 David began working for the U.S. Postal Service where he was a letter carrier until he retired in 1998 after almost 32 years of service. To keep busy during his retirement he worked part-time at in the shoe department of Lazarus/Macy’s Department Store for 12 years.

David also worked part-time for a number of sports and concert venues around Indianapolis. In 1967, when the Indianapolis Pacers were founded as one of the original 11 teams of the American Basketball Association, David started a 49 year relationship working as an usher and attendant, retiring in 2016.  Other part-time employment included a number of years working for Starlight Musicals: Stars Under the Stars shows at the Hilton U. Brown Theatron in Indianapolis, numerous concerts at Deer Creek Amphitheatre in Noblesville, football games and other events at the Hoosier Dome until it was demolished in 2007, Indianapolis Colts games at Lucas Oil Stadium, and Indianapolis Indians baseball at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

David was a lifelong Cincinnati Reds baseball fan and attended every opening day game in Cincinnati taking his sons, family, and friends continuously since the 1980 season, only missing a game for the first time this current year. David also enjoyed attending the Indianapolis 500 every year, and enjoyed the greatest spectacle in racing in person, until 2016.  He also loved attending Butler University basketball games with his wife Margie at Hinkle Fieldhouse and cheering on the Butler Bulldogs.

David was a loving father to his three children, as well as his two grandsons that he adored.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Margie A. (Gray) Lawson; his son, Michael Lawson and wife Tamara; his daughter, Tricia (Lawson) Petty and husband Steve; two grandchildren, Brendan and Nicholas; niece, Michelle Kolb Piening and husband Ryan; and great-nephew, Mason. David was preceded in death by his son, Scott Lawson, his sister, Nancy Lawson Kolb, and his nephew, Bob Kolb.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18 at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W Moore Chapel, with visitation beginning at 10 A.M.  David will be laid to rest with military honors at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, IN following the service.

Family will receive friends from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday, April 17 at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association.

    Dear Margie, Tricia and Michael,
I have so many fond memories of you and Scott and I want to offer my sympathy at the loss of your husband and dad. Scheduling prevents me from being with you these days but be assured of my prayers for you. Dave is reaping the rewards of a good and holy life and one day you will be together again. I treasure this quote from author/pastor Phil Gulley. May it bring you peace. “Our consolation resides in memories, both strong and faint, and in the people remaining, friends and family alike, who by their loving presence make bearable our afflictions.”
    Sr. Mary Luke

    Dear Margie and family,
I was sweet to see you all last night at the funeral home. David will be so missed by you and the kids in the days and years to come. But your memories of him will stay forever and you’ll hear his voice and again laugh at funny things he said more than you can now imagine. David was a good and kind man who sincerely loved his family and was kind to everyone.
