Charles ‘Nelson’ Higginbotham was born on March 1, 1924 to Charles and Ruby (Fuller) Higginbotham in Frankfort, Indiana. Nelson grew up in Indianapolis and spent his childhood summers with grandparents in Frankfort. Nelson was an only child, but had many cousins in Frankfort that were more like siblings to him especially Bud (Don) Fuller.
At the age of 17, Nelson enlisted in the Navy and became a Signal Master onboard the A.C. Rubel. He spent most of his tour of duty in the South Pacific during WWII. When interviewed (by his then 13 year old granddaughter for a school project); Nelson is quoted as saying he was proud to be an American, those who fought and lost their lives were his heroes and that he wouldn’t take a million dollars for his experience during WWII. He graduated from Tri-State University in their Engineering program.
In the early 1950’s he began dating Dolores Collins and in November of 1954 they were married. Nelson and Dee had two children DeeAnn (1956) and John (1961). Nelson was in sales with Honeywell and Alpha Metals, traveling extensively in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. Nelson was a supportive father and grandfather, encouraging his children and granddaughters to pursue their dreams and could often be heard bragging about their accomplishments! Nelson and Dee were very active at Hope Church and later at Faith Missionary Church where they enjoyed serving the Lord alongside many wonderful friends.
There is a definition of what a Hoosier that fits Nelson to a T; “Hoosier: a person born in Indiana, industrious, hospitable, down home folk, who enjoys popcorn, Indian summers, race cars and basketball.” Nelson loved all sports but especially enjoyed watching the Colts and the Indy 500.
Just last week, Nelson told a dear family friend he was ready to meet Jesus and see Dee again! And we know for certain that on September 28, 2016, at approximately 7:15 am there was a reunion party in heaven! With Dee, with his extended family and with his church family; all the saints who have gone before him who were waiting to welcome him through heavens’ gate!
Nelson is survived by DeeAnn, (Ron Feick,) John Fuller (Tobias Reimers.) and Grand-daughters ~ Ashley and Kary Feick; He will be remembered most for his love for his family and friends, his witty sense of humor and his love for his Savior.
