Barbara Ellen Weir, age 89, passed into eternal life on September 23, 2016 after a brief illness. Born January 23, 1927 as the eldest child of Joseph Francis and Catherine B. (Grube) Schenkel, Barbara was a true product of the Great Depression and never passed up the opportunity to save a plastic bag or safety pin. Upon graduation from Marian College, Barbara became a Spanish interpreter for Eli Lilly and Co. In 1952, she met her husband, Donald E. Weir, at the ice skating rink at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. It truly was “love at first collision.”
Barbara was a founding member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, a member of the Mud Creek Garden Club, Chairperson of the Park-Tudor School Home Tour, Chairperson of the Park-Tudor Mothers Association, and President of the Indiana State Museum Volunteer Society. An active lover of nature, Barbara was always feeding birds, planting flowers, and “working in the yard.” Her strong Catholic faith sustained and enriched her spirit over the years.
Survivors include her son, Don Weir (Jan) of Indianapolis and Harbor Springs, MI; grandchildren, Sarah Ackerman (Matt) of Cincinnati, OH, Laura Jackey (Philip) of Indianapolis, and Lt. Matt Weir, USAF (Hannah) of Minot, ND; one great-granddaughter Raelynn Jackey; and a brother, Joe Schenkel of Apopka, FL. Preceding her in death was her husband of 57 years, Donald Weir, P.E., and her sister, Joy Chapman.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Dan Gartland on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Chapel within the Our Lady of Peace Mausoleum (9001 Haverstick Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46240). Calling will be 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church at Geist (10350 Glaser Way, Fishers, IN 46037).
