Allen L. Titus, 84, a long-time American Legion leader at both the state and national levels, passed away on May 20, 2015, at his home in Satellite Beach, FL following a brief illness. Born July 29, 1930, Mr. Titus was a native of Rockport, Indiana where he and his wife Louvena (Vee) lived for many years and who, along with son Dirk, daughter Tara, Granddaughters, Megan Broyles, Meredith Scruggs, Jia Lin Jonas, and Jin Na Jones; great-grandsons, Liam Titus Scruggs and Nolan Michael Scruggs, survives.

Mr. Titus was microbiologist technician in the Research and Quality Standards Department of General Foods Corporation in Evansville until his retirement in 1993. In addition to his career at General Foods, Mr. Titus successfully operated a number of small businesses, and was active in civic and community affairs, including the Jaycees and the Boy Scouts of America.

A 63-year member of The American Legion, Mr. Titus was a decorated Korean War combat veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952. He received numerous military awards, including the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. He was honorably discharged from the USMC as a Sergeant with four battle stars.

He was the second Korean War veteran in Indiana American Legion history to serve as Commander of the Indiana Department of The American Legion (1982-1983).

Mr. Titus was a life member of Jenkins American Legion Post 254 in Rockport, IN, where he served as commander in addition to holding a number of lesser offices. He was district commander, a member of the Department Finance Committee, chaired all four commissions of the state organization, and was Alternate National Executive Committee member and Department Vice Commander before beginning his national American Legion career.

In addition to his election to National Vice Commander in 1986, Mr. Titus also served as a member of the National Security Commission, the Insurance Committee, the Aerospace Committee, and as chairman of both the Distinguished Guest Committee, the National Economic Commission, and the National Security Commission.

Always with the best interest of The American Legion at heart, Mr. Titus was Indiana’s endorsed candidate for National Commander until he stepped aside in favor of a younger candidate.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2015, at the Indiana World War Memorial, 51 E Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Condolences can be sent to the family at the Satellite Beach home address, 668 Monterey Drive, Satellite Beach, FL 32937.
