Robert William “Bob” Canty, 71, of Indianapolis, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 12, 2010. Bob was born in Newburgh, NY on December 15, 1938, the son of the late Edward and Ruth (St. John) Canty. He graduated from the New York School for the Deaf in 1957, and later from Gallaudet College in 1960. Over the years, Bob worked at Cornwell Press, New York Daily News, New York School for the Deaf, Captioned Films for the Deaf, and as the Media Coordinator at Indiana School for the Deaf.Bob was a vital member of the Deaf community in Indianapolis, focusing most recently as founder and editor of the Indy Deaf News. He was a highly respected mentor and friend to countless ASL students and interpreters, and an active member of several Deaf organizations. In 2007 Bob received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Governor Mitch Daniels. Bob’s most treasured membership; however, was his membership in God’s family as a follower of Jesus Christ.Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda (Helms) Canty. He also leaves behind nephews John Cleary and Bill Cleary, and nieces Kathy Navarrette, Marianna Stewart, Sharon Carson, and Beth Earle.Visitation will be Friday, April 16 from 2 pm until 6 pm at the Christian Life Church of the Deaf 3600 W 96th in Indianapolis, IN with services immediately following. Interment will be in Morganton, NC, Monday April 19 at 10:30 a.m.

    Linda, I will always be so very grateful for your’s and Bob’s kindness towards me. When I first moved here I only knew Barb and Dave. You are wonderful neighbors full of compassion for others and for Christ. Thank you for sharing your lives with mine. You will be in my prayers. I love you, Bonny
