Larry, you were one of a kind. There is not enough space to say all that can be said. Thank you for giving us who you were, the laughs, what you gave to the students (can’t even begin to touch that topic:)!, for all the help and advice you have given us, and the way you loved our mom. You were a great man with character. Honest and fair, and love to have fun. The blessings you gave are countless and we will miss you so. Until we all meet again. Love, your step daughter and son-in-law,

    Bart and Dianna Colvin

Larry’s enthusiasm was contagious and he did much to encourage me to be all that I could be and to give my time and other resources to help others. He was always a friend and there to help.

Mr Marker was a wonderful man that made a difference in many lives. It did not matter if you was rich or poor, fat or skinny, into sports or not, Mr Marker treated everyone the same. He had a paddle and he was not afraid to use it. They broke the mold after Mr Marker, Randolph Southern was blessed to have him as long as they did.
    God bless you all!!

There was only one Mr. Larry Marker and he was special to Randolph Southern. Discipline has not been the same since Mr. Marker was there. The kids respected him and could have a good time with him, but knew when he meant business also. What a legacy he leaves behind in Lynn! Thank you to the family for sharing the last hours with us. He will truly be remembered with great fondness~ I am so sorry for the loss of this great man and pray that God watches over the family and gives you a peace that only He can give to all of you!

Dear Kathy, Dave, and Karen… So sorry to hear about your father. What an awesome guy. No more suffering for him… He gets to go home. Your dad was always smiling and laughing. He was such a good principal and a good mentor to the kids. They always respected him. But they always new when he meant business. Tom and I would get together with other people we went to school with and talk about the good old days, and good old Mr. Marker would come up in the conversion and we would laugh about something he said or did. Pretty special fellow. He will truly be missed, and lot of good memories will go on. Take care all of you and God Bless. Love Tom and Patty Harshman Class of 1978 and 1981.

It is still hard to believe that you are truly gone. I miss so many things about you Dad. The way you would take me fishing with you when I was very young. Those are memories I will forever cherish. I was just a bratty kid I am sure but you let me come along and looking back on those days always brings a smile to my face. You weren’t just my Dad–you were like a Dad to almost every student at Randolph Southern. I loved our Senior Trip when you didn’t have to be Mr. Marker–Principal. You were just along to have a great time and make sure everyone behaved. I do believe alot of kids in my class changed their opinions of you during that time because they could finally see that you were just a parent and you were also their friend. I am grateful that you are no longer suffering or in any pain. That was very difficult for me to see you that way because you have always been larger than life in my eyes. I love you Dad–my Forever Guardian Angel!!!

There are certain people you remember in your lifetime, not because of who they were, but HOW they were. Larry was one of the HOW people. I was fortunate enough to be at Northeastern when he was a teacher there. I was also fortunate enough to have him as my driver’s ed teacher. Sitting in a car with someone, even an instructor, for an hour a day a couple of days a week gave you more insight into the person. I also had a little more insight than the average student as Larry grew up in the same neighborhood as my Mom. She was a few years older than Larry, but knew him, and had a few stories about him.
After I graduated from high school, there was a local softball league started in Fountain City with people from the area. My brother and I were fortunate enough to be on the same team with Larry. We got to see more of Larry the man, instead of Larry, the educator, although we probably learned on the ball diamond too. I know he was the only person that I ever saw that could actually curve a slow softball pitch. He’d brush the ball against his leg in the pitching motion, and it would curve. I never figured out how.
Unfortunately, there are not many educators left in the mold of Mr. Marker.
I’m glad his pain and suffering is over. May he Rest in Peace.
Please know that there are thousands of his students in the world that were positively affected by Mr. Marker.

I have very fond memories of Larry. He was my PE Teacher and Track coach at Northeastern. I was sorry to hear he had passed. My father used to play cards with Larry in Fountain City. Larry was a big part of my childhood/highschool memories. I am very sorry for your loss, I know he will be missed.

I didn’t know Larry real well. Only have good memories of him. I coached a girl’s softball team in Fountain City when he was at Northeastern. He was umpire for alot of our games. He was always fun to be around, even when he was kind of bawling me out in one of our games. My thoughts and prayers are with the family in their time of sorrow and celebrating his life.

I sure enjoyed working at the school while your dad was there. You never knew what he was going to say or do. The school would be better off right now if he was still there. With all my thoughts and love.

Karen, Kathy & David: Gary and I send our sincere condolences to you and your extended family. I knew your Dad on many different levels and have many memories of him. He and my Dad (Bill Greene)were good friends and met even before he came to the Spartanburg-Lynn area. My cousin, who was doing his student teaching under him at Williamsburg, brought your Dad up to our farm to hunt. When he came to Randolph Southern, they became “honky tonk” buddies. They played many games of euchre together and told tall stories. I then went to work in the HS office and he became by boss. I saw everyday how he worked with kids. I was the witness as he gave the board to one boy; and, one was enough for me! I also saw how he encouraged them. He was the driving force behind RS Athletic Hall of Fame and establishing our scholarship fund that has helped so very many with college money through the years. Our girls (Caren 1985 and Ceann 1989) were in school with you. Having Dad around as AD & principal wasn’t always easy, but I know he loved you very much. He was very proud of each of you and had reason to be. Caren and Ceann were at your house the night my dad died. Your dad told them that their Grampa was gone. Ceann was 10 years old and still remembers how kind he was, what he said and how he told them. May it comfort you to know that his legacy will be a part of this community for years to come.

I am so sorry for your loss. You all are in my prayers. He was truly a great person and touched so many lives. The stories that have been told in the last few weeks have been really cool and it just goes to show you how he touched so many of us and helped shape us into the adults we are today. We all have been truly blessed and I thank God for bringing him and his family to the Lynn area. I’m sure that him and Nelson are in heaven looking down on us; and sharing alot of stories that we didn’t get to hear. I can hear them both laughing. God Bless all of you…:)
