John W. Pettengill, 80, of Indianapolis, passed away at home on February 2, 2010. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 24, 1929, the son of the late Francis and Elizabeth (Smith) Pettengill. After attending Colby College, John served in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and was awarded the Bronze Star. Later he attended Columbia University where he earned a Masters in English. John was an employee of Union Camp for 32 years and retired in 2000. John was an active member of the Indianapolis community through pursuing his own interests and supporting those of his wife and 3 sons. He joined the Indianapolis Racquet Club in 1986 and was a frequent volunteer during the USTA Tennis Championships held in Indianapolis. In 2004, he joined the Sertoma Club of North Downtown Indianapolis where he served as president. John had a love of sailing and made sure to visit any nearby marina when traveling. He was an avid reader of non-fictional accounts of people’s adventures and biographies of historical figures; his interest in contemporary events is reflected in the numerous daily and weekly publications to which he subscribed.He is survived by his wife, Marian Martin Pettengill; 3 sons, John Jr, (Krystyna), Patrick (Casey), and James; 3 grandchildren, Nathaniel Pettengill (John, Jr), Colleen and Riley Pettengill (Patrick), and his nephew, John Bradley Pettengill. The Pettengill’s thank all of our and John’s friends, near and far, for their support and positive thoughts over the past couple of months. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 6th from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Harry W. Moore Funeral Care (8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250); a brief Memorial Service will follow at 5:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy of Indiana, 1505 N. Delaware St., Ste 200, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
