Story Title: Christmas 2005
By: Pat Shirley
I am not sure if it was the year was actually 2005, but we shared a Christmas Day with Dale and Judy along with some other friends and family. We had a lovely dinner and retired to the Family Room to chat and I had gifts for everyone…the gifts were wrapped very nicely and the guests were allowed to choose their gifts…all but one were “Lottery Tickets”. One was a lump of coal that our nephew got…anyway, Dale was the first one to scratch off his ticket and he had won $10,000….WOW…he was so excited and turned to me and said he would be happy to split it with me…then Judy scratched off her’s and she had won too…..wait a minute, then they all discovered they had won $10,000, except the poor nephew of course….Judy looked at me and asked if it was a joke, which of course it was…..BUT Dale had been so sincere…I had never thought someone would react that way…I guess it shows his true nature…to give back…I am sure he is at Judy’s side now…not being limited with an ill body..but free. We will remember many good times together…just so you know, Jack cried when he heard the news..his thoughts are with you too..

I am so sorry to hear of the death of your beloved husband Judy. I am only 4 years older than him and I think about my future. Our son died of metastatic kidney cancer at 38. I have formed the only kidney cancer support group in Michigan. I also have a huge Facebook group with many children and adults of various cancers and professional people. I wish there will soon be an announcement that kidney cancer and other cancers will be eradicated.May the future be brighter and may you have wonderful memories to cherish. Love, Prof. Frank Friedman,Flint,Mi.

Hello Judy:
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. While I do not know him very well, my colleagues who knew him, spoke very highly of him. At times like this, it is often difficult to know what to say. Please note that we in the ET community share in your grief. I pray that God will grant you His peace and comfort at this time.

I send my sincere condolences to the family of J. Dale Pounds. I worked with him in both the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and the American Society for Engineering Education and found him to always have creative ideas that challenged the status quo and worked toward continuous improvement of engineering technology education and manufacturing education.

I am so sorry for your loss, Judy. I sure enjoyed working with you and your family. I wish I had gotten to know “Dean Pounds” during my time at WCU. From what I’ve heard, he was a great man. You are in my thoughts. I know you will find the strength to enter this new phase of your life with your head held high. Please call me sometime when you are in Charleston again. I would love to see you! Take care of you!!

To Dale’s family. I was so sorry to read about Dale’s passing when I received the January Alumnus today. Dale and I were close during our years in civil engineering at Purdue and I thought about him many times over the years wondering where he ended up. I was hoping to run into him at our 50th reunion next year. Again my sincere condolences to your family.

To the family of Dale Pounds,
As we near one year from the time of Dale’s passing, I want to send a message of condolence with the hope that you are coping well with the loss. Dale was a strong member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and fun to work with. His legacy is still making a difference in SME, particularly on the accreditation front where he was very active.

I attended Purdue 1973-1975 and he is the only professor that I remember. He was my Statistics professor. For some reason he came across my mind tonight. Although it has been four years, my prayers are with the family.
