Charles Kirtley Baker III, aka Chuck or CharlieDecember 7, 1920 – April 21, 2009A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Charlie attended Broad Ripple High School and I.U. His passions were his family and his music. He played trumpet in the Newsboy’s Band, Chuck Smith’s band at I.U., and the Coast Guard band during his WWII service days as a gunner’s mate. He was a well-known Indianapolis musician from the 1940s to the 1980s, often leading in Chuck Baker and Friends and other local jazz/dance bands. Charlie’s quick wit, jokes and puns were his trademark on stage and in life. He was a loan officer and collection agent for businesses including Citizens Federal Savings and Loan and the Greater Indianapolis Housing Authority, retiring in 1985.He is preceded in death by his mother Emma Dean Herbig Baker, his sister Mary Marlowe Baker Watson, his brother- in- law Dr. Howard Watson, his former wife Evelyn Delores Sexson Baker, his Sexson family in-laws, many musician ’brothers’, companion Barbara June Mull and friend Myrtle Meador. He is survived by son C. Kirt (Abigail) Baker, daughter Cathy Dee Baker, grandchildren Jennifer (Chad) Short, Natalie and Heather McCormick, Sara (Mike) Gonser, and Daniel (Erica), Jordan (Elizabeth), Rose and Timothy Baker; great-grandchildren Hailey Short and Avolyn Gonser, nephews Dr. Nicholas (Terri) Watson and Dr. Timothy Watson, brother-in-law Ward (Lynn) Sexson, his musician brothers in the American Federation of Musicians Local #3 Union and friend Della Richardson.Per his request, there will be a memorial service at the Good Shepherd Chapel at the Oaklawn Cemetery (9700 Allisonville) at 3:00 pm on Friday, April 24, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Clarion (Ruth Lilly) Hospice and/or Local # 3 Distressed Members Fund, 325 N. Delaware, Indianapolis, IN 46204. The family would like to thank the staff of Ruth Lilly Hospice, Glendale Carriage House Apartments, American Village, CICOA, Caregivers II (especially Angie White), Comfort Keepers and Methodist Hospital.
