Bonnie Bess (Myers) Poehlmann, 89 died April 12, 2008. She is survived by her four children: Ann Foster, Carol Wagner, Hans and Fred Poehlmann; her sisters: Elizabeth Knotts and Rose Fleischner, three granddaughters, two grandsons and two great-grandsons. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years, George Poehlmann, and her brother Herbert Lowe Myers.Bonnie was born in Morgan County Indiana in 1918, the second child of Samual and Letitia Myers. Like many of her generation, her early years were shaped by the experiences of the Great Depression and WWI but also by the love and support of her family.Bonnie lived most of her life in the Indianapolis area, attending public grade school 27, Shortridge High School and graduating from Butler University in 1939. Following graduation Bonnie worked in the Central Library reference department. In 1943 she and George were married at All Souls Unitarian Church and their first homes were on military bases around the country prior to his transfer overseas. Following the war, she then assumed the responsibilities and joys of raising a family; her love of music and reading was passed along to her children through music lessons and trips to the library. Each of her children was blessed by her special attention and encouragement of their individual interests and abilities. Her strong values of education, involvement in community and tolerance of differences benefited her children and many others. She and George took the family on numerous educational and outdoor vacations throughout the U.S. as the children grew up. The family became avid campers.Upon George’s early retirement, they shared many years of exploring the U.S. in a camper van with their beagle. They also traveled internationally, visiting countries in Europe and the Far East. In addition, they attended 34 Elderhostel programs.Bonnie enjoyed playing the piano, reading and always was interested in learning. She continued to study piano into her later years and remained an active member of the Butler Literary Club. She possessed a tremendous memory of and caring for a large circle of relatives, friends and associates which amazed all who knew her. She was a dedicated member and library volunteer at All Souls Unitarian Church.A memorial/celebration service will be held Saturday, April 26th at 2:00 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Church. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Indy Reads, Hamilton County Humane Society, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra or the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis.
