Beulah Marie (Hart) Thomas

Beulah Marie (Hart) Thomas of Indianapolis was born on June 2, 1917 in Fedora, SD to Bishop Frank Hart and Metta Ann (King) Hart and departed this life on Monday December 10, 2012 at the age of 95.

Beulah grew up with her four brothers on the family farm in Fedora, SD. She attended Fedora High School where she played on a championship basketball team. Upon graduating, she attended Eastern State College and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where she earned a B.S. in Business Administration. She valued learning and was committed to education, continuing her own education by taking courses and reading extensively throughout her lifetime.

After college, Beulah taught school for several years then moved to Sioux Falls to work at the Veterans Administration Center. She met her future husband, B. Frank Thomas, while attending church. They married in 1950, had five children in Sioux Falls, and a sixth child after they moved to Elmhurst, IL in 1960.

In addition to all she was involved in with raising and caring for her family, Beulah was an active member of both AAUW and First United Methodist Church, taught shorthand and typing, sold Avon cosmetics, was a medical transcriptionist at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and enjoyed tennis, swimming and music.

After retiring, Beulah and Frank enjoyed an active life together, working out at the “Y, volunteering in local schools, traveling extensively, reading with book clubs and enjoying time with their family and many friends. They moved to Indianapolis in 1992.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Wilbur, Seward, Austin and Lyle. She is survived by her loving husband Frank Thomas of Indianapolis; her six children, Ronald, Susan, Patricia (Gary), Donna (James), James (Judy), and Anita; her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services for Beulah Thomas were held at 2pm on Friday December 14, 2012 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, IN with the Reverend Rob Fuquay officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AAUW (aauw.org) or the American Cancer Society (1-800- 227-2345).
