Arthur Lewis Lash, 98, of Carmel, passed away on April 23, 2012, in Indianapolis. Arthur was born to Bessie May Bolin and George Urban Lash on October 11, 1913, in Meigs County, Ohio. He was the oldest of five children. He was a 1939 graduate of Ohio State University. In l935 he married Caryl McVey, his childhood sweetheart. Arthur and Caryl both attended a one-room schoolhouse until the eighth grade.
Arthur worked hard on the family farm near Albany, Ohio, plowing the land with a team and working with a variety of livestock. He began his career with the Civil Conservation Corps during the Depression. He served as a soil conservationist for the Department of Agriculture in counties in Ohio and Indiana, helping farmers with proper land usage. He retired in 1969 and moved to Fort Wayne and then Carmel.
Arthur enjoyed a simple life, believing in God, working hard, and loving his family. He especially enjoyed gardening, travel, and spending time with his sisters and brother. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Westfield.
Arthur is survived by his two daughters, Connie and Scharme; three grandchildren, Melinda, Brad, and Shannon; seven great-grandchildren, Eric, Tracie, Logan, Austin, Ryan, Ben, and Emme; and one great-great-grandchild, Kylie. Arthur was predeceased by his wife, Caryl, a grandson, Steve, and a sister, Doris.
Calling will be Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m., with the service following at 11 a.m., at the Harry Moore Funeral Home at 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis. Burial will be immediately following at the Nebo Memorial Gardens in Martinsville.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.
