Joan Rahrar Wright
11/4/29 to 5/10/19
Joan Rahrar Wright was born November 4, 1929 to Reverend Harley Jennings Rahrar and Shella Abshire Rahrar. The youngest of four children, she was adored by her big brothers, Lowell and Buddy, and sister, Evelyn. Being a pastor’s daughter, she was a talented musician serving as church pianist and organist, and she was a lovely example to the congregation. The Rahrars served in numerous pastorates throughout Indiana.
Soon after her high school graduation in Evansville, IN, one of her Dad’s pastorates, Joan became a highly valued employee of the Travelers Insurance Company in Indianapolis. She advanced in her job, eventually rising to supervisor of a department. After 37 faithful years, she retired according to her goal, though she was implored to stay on. Even later, she was asked on more than one occasion to come back to her position. But her plan was set, and she remained in retirement.
In October of 1954, Joan married Don C. Wright of Indianapolis. Don was enthusiastic in fishing and hunting, and Joan supported his interest, as they camped and boated on various Indiana Lakes for many years. They were not blessed with children; but Joan was devoted to family. She lovingly cared for her aging parents, valued her close relationship with her sister, and enriched the lives of her nieces and nephews, who always knew with great confidence that their “Aunt Jo” loved them unconditionally. Her sweet spirit and generosity extended to friends and neighbors as well as recent caregivers. She will be missed by all on whose lives she lovingly had impact.
Joan is survived by her husband, Don, nephews, Ron Oakes and Tom Rahrar, niece Sharon Oakes Listenberger (Richard), and numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at Washington Park East Cemetery on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 2 pm.
